I think that is very wise.
Ultimately it is not possible to go to an employment tribunal about any disciplinary sanction short of dismissal. So, although you can appeal internally if they also deal with that unfairly (in your opinion) there is nothing whatever you can do about it.
Also, annoying as it may be, what action they did or didn't take regarding a colleague is none of your business.
