HMRC portal - You have no tax to pay

I've filed my tax return on the 30th of Jan, and although I need to pay an amount for tax, the portal shows "You have no tax to pay."

I think I need to wait for the system to show me the amount, however what happens if that goes past the deadline of 31st Jan?

How to best tackle this?

  • View your calculation and pay what it shows. There is nothing that will change the amount which will appear on your account in due course. (Many believe that HMRC miraculously check every return before adding the liability to one’s account)

What about payments in account from previous years? That will affect things.

Question. If you were due a rebate, would you wait until 30th January to do your tax return?

When I did my return last august I was able to set up a DD straight away and the money was stolen this morning!

I don't know. Most likely yes.

Rely solely on your Self Assessment Statement. That will tell you just what you owe and by when you need to pay it.

In particular, ignore that barmy, misleading "You have no tax to pay" nonsense.
