Link Financial

Hi everyone,
I’m new to this, so bear with me. I had student loans with SLC from 96-99. So 3 in total. Between moving house and all manner of life, I didn’t defer from 2011-2017. I got a letter to deferat Easter 2017. I put it to one side and thought I would deal with it after Easter as we just got the news that my dad was terminal. I replied after Easter, but then they told me it was too late and had been passed on to Link Financial. I told them I’m not in a position to pay.
I told them I also wasn’t in the frame of mind to deal with them at that time. They contacted me again the day after my dad passed. I have avoided them since. I blocked their number but have continued to call on a new number. They are emailing me also. I have read that I don’t have to pay it back as I am still under the threshold. It’s really stressful. What can I do?

Stressed to say the least!

  • Hi
Just to be clear, you did not defer your loan between 2011 and 2017, so did you pay monthly instalments instead? Or have you defaulted on it for the last 8 years?
Link Financial appear to be managing the loans for accounts that are not abiding by the conditions of the loan. Kind of like a debt collecting organisation maybe?
I have no idea if this will mean you lose the right to defer or not. It might mean that, which is such a shame given it sounds as though you are under the threshold. Your best bet is phone link financial and sort this out. You may be able to work this loan as though it was still with student loans but you take a risk. You need to phone them and find out if deferral is possible.
So sorry to hear about your dad.

  • I just didn’t defer. I never repaid anything. But they did say that derferment isn’t an option as it has been passed to them. And thanks.
