DW Sports / Fitness First did NOT cancel contract

Me and partner were both members of Fitness First / DW Sports gym. My contract was a monthly rolling contract, she had signed up for a 12 month contract and was in month 7 of it.
September 2018
We moved house which was far enough away to trigger her release clause from the 12 month contract. We went in to store and I cancelled my contract with ease, she had to provide proof of our new address, we did. The woman at the desk took the paperwork and went in to the office to scan the documents and email them to HQ and cancel the contract, she came back and said all was fine and her membership was cancelled too. Because we cancelled in middle of september we had to pay for 1 more full month, which we both did. After this month we both cancelled our direct debits.
January 1st she gets an email from DW Fitness saying that she is now £70 in arrears for 2 months unpaid. Plus £50 fee for not paying. She phoned them up and they said that she hasn't cancelled and they have no email regarding her membership (pretty sure its a lie because the woman at the desk went away to scan/email for 5 minutes, not a quick chuck it on the desk to handle later and forgot).
They say that we need to pay that as it is now in arrears and then they can cancel the contract.
We ignored them and then they have sent a "bailiff" letter asking for £150 owed to DW Sports (so that is another month they have added on).
I'm going to phone them tonight and tell them to "do one" in other words, I am not going to pay for them making a mistake or missing an email etc.
However, I am sure there is better advice in this forum on how to handle the situation....
