My granddaughter has got herself in a lot of debt. She has mental health problems (bipolar we think) which are now being addressed. However it means she has around £4500 of debt at the moment. To top it all she had a major car accident, was off work for 4 months and has a slow recovery meaning she will not be up to her full wages for another few months. I have spoken to a debt company but they are unable to help as part of the debt was for rent at a housing charity.
On their advice I have written to all the companies and advised her situation. Out of the 5 debts Vodafone is pursuing her relentlessly. I have supplied her discharge notice from the hospital which outlines her injuries, she was in a back and thoracic brace for 3 months and could not even attend to her own personal needs let alone work. Now they are saying they will keep on adding interest unless she sends a letter from a solicitor regarding her situation. She cant afford a solicitor. what can we do?

Didn't want to read and run. There are very knowledgeable people on here who will be along shortly I am sure to offer further advice, but you can support your grand daughter in the meantime by helping her to contact one of the debt charities such as Stepchange https://www.stepchange.org/ Have a look at their web site.

Please don't worry too much - the debt charities are there to help.

    Hi,

Under what circumstances do you think Vodafone could add interest to a mobile service agreement ?

Under no circumstances that’s when, under these agreements you are only ever liable for outstanding line rental, and unpaid airtime, nothing else, so why they say they will add interest is a mystery.

And as for a solicitors letter, what a load of utter rubbish.

Simply write to Vodafone explaining the circumstances, tell them to stop collection activity immediately, as you are taking advice from a debt charity, and that from now on, you consent to contact in writing only.

Then consult with stepchange as to her next move to deal with this.

Someone else who doesn't understand what GDPR is or its rules. You can't use GDPR to force them to contact only in writing because GDPR has absolutely nothing to do with that, it is to do with the COLLECTION and handling of personal information and consent in regards to GDPR is only to do with you consenting to them collecting data and how they use it.

Back to the original post. Contact Stepchange, they're a charity that handle debt problems for free and they carry a lot more weight than most of the companies that charge a fee to do the same thing.
