Recruiter connecting on LinkedIn

Options
Hi all - not much of a question or anything here, but did wonder what people thought of this.

I applied for a role direct with an employer a couple of weeks or so ago. A couple of days after an internal recruiter from the company sent a connection request to me on LinkedIn.

Great, I thought, that is maybe a positive sign that they are interested. So I accepted the connection and thought they might be in touch. Ever since connecting though, the recruiter hasn't sent any messages or anything. A week or so after I applied, I sent a really quick message through LinkedIn thanking him for the connection and asking if it was in connection with the application.

I'm aware not that much time has passed (a couple of weeks since application) but I have a sneaking suspicion the recruiter may just have added me to expand their LinkedIn network, even if they don't want to take this application forward.

What would you think in that scenario, if anything?

Going through your connections to find other candidates to offer the job to might be one possible reason - I've had a few recruiters try that with me. If they're constantly viewing your profile but never make contact, that's usually a good indication.

Setting your privacy settings so that only you can see your connections is the best way to prevent this, and whilst you're at it, review them generally, as you might be surprised who can see what - like google, facebook, you and your data are the product which is being sold - it's not some altruistic work-related social network!

It's never a bad thing to be in a recruiter's network. Some recruiters (good ones normally) double check CVs against Linkedin for inconsistencies.

I don't think I'd do any more here.
  • It may or may not be to do with the application. Either way they should revert back to you professionally re the application and LI message. Otherwise not worth getting involved.
  • I welcome any recruiter connecting with me on LinkedIn whether I am on the job market of not.

I had a recent connection request, which has led to the offering of a significant role, a big step up for me, which I was looking for.

You may not be successful in your current application, but they may want to keep connected with you for the future.

    Does it really matter?
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!
  • I think your over thinking it. I know loads of people in recruitment and HR that do this to just check individuals out basically.

    yep man
Could you explain why, please? Doesn't seem very important in the grand scale of things.
  • there also people on linkedin who are LION : meaning Linkedin Open Network
so they add people on a regular basis to have lots of connection...and the day they will be interested in you, they will be able to contact you more easily since they already have you in their network (useful strategy)

Any reason you're resurrecting a five year old thread...? Seems an odd thing to do for a first post.
