Regular Police VS Police Now

  • Can I seriously recommend you do become a special constable first so you get a taste of what it's like first ?

You don't have to wait 6 months to apply to become a special constable

Yes its hard going holding down a job & doing the hours but it will stand you in good stead.....my son should know he failed the first time he applied to join the police but become a special & passed on the 2nd attempt
  • I’ve strongly considered that. May I ask how long the training was to become a special & how long he was a special for?

The training schedule is far more intensive - longer days and crammed into a shorter time period.

All people on the Police Now scheme go and work in neighbourhood policing - which happens with lots of new recruits anyway. It's not necessarily the best way to learn; most people would say that the best way to learn about policing at the beginning is to start on a response team answering 999 calls.

Ultimately it's just a different structure, it's not a fast-track scheme and nothing is guaranteed, if you want to be a cop then go and be a cop. It won't matter hugely either way what your particular training structure is.

Sorry OP I meant to come back to you but forgot.

I'm not sure how long his training was but it was mainly on Friday evenings and at the weekend & he was a special for about 9 months before he gave up to become a regular ( didn't give up until he was due to start his training).

It was hard going as he was working Monday to Friday as well as putting his hours in as a special but we're convinced he wouldn't have got in unless he had been - if only because it gave him the experience of the job.
