E120 - Red Food Colouring
Ever wondered where the red colouring in curries, sweets and Campari comes from? The dye known as cochineal (E120) actually comes from the crushed carcasses of the female cactus-feeding coccid insect. Is it safe? The Hyperactive Children's Support Group recommends E120 be eliminated from children's diets.
E170 - Calcium Carbonate
Calcium carbonate is a white food colouring found in bread, biscuits and cakes. Natural sources include chalk and the shells of sea snails. It's also used in toothpastes, cleaning powder and white paint. Finding the truth hard to digest? Calcium carbonate can also be found in many indigestion remedies.
E904 - Shellac
Can't resist sugared almonds? Most sweets get their gleam from a coating of shellac, the same coating used on vinyl records.
Where's it from? Shellac is secreted by the female Coccus lacca insect, which uses the resin to hold her eggs to the bark of certain trees in India and Asia.

Cheers Cathy. Friends son used to behave badly after eating cochineal. She discovered it, but used to have problems finding it listed on food products cos she said it was labelled 'natural' colourants. Anyone know if that's right ???0

yes, thats right, because the insect yuk is after all natural
so is deadly nightshade and toadstools!!
MSG is horrific stuff and that comes under "other flavourings" so be careful with that as well.
you have to be so careful with food labeling
for instance "BREAD WITH ADDED VITAMINS"
thats because they took all the vitamins out of it in the first place so have been ordered to put some back. and the "added calcium" they brag about it plaster of paris or chalk
