Getting married - Yay or nay?

My partner & I are looking to plan our wedding but I was declared bankrupt middle of 2018.

He will be in a good financial position to get a mortgage in a couple of years time. If we marry, would it set him back getting credit or does it not matter if my name isn't on the application?

Basically, is it easier for him to get a mortgage if we aren't married? We don't have a joint account at the moment and won't for a while yet.

  • As long as your credit files aren't connected by a joint financial product then you won't affect your partner even if you get married. My partner had some late payments and a couple of defaults. We got married a couple of years ago. We are in the process of buying and I have looked at my credit file in detail and there is zero connection with him. Just make sure no house bills are in joint names, you get no joint insurance products that are paid monthly (like house insurance) and you don't open a joint bank account etc. Just wait until after your mortgage goes through if you really feel you need to do this.
