Gas usage

Hello
Can anyone shed any light on a situation I've found myself in. Scottish Power have sent me my last quarters gas bill (I know this isn't the cheapest way of paying but that's how I have it) The problem I have is that in the last quarter they reckon my gas consumption is 34,506 kwh compared to last year for the same period where it was 2,490 kwh. This has given me a heart stopping sized bill that I'm losing sleep over. Scottish Power say the meter supports that usage and so I've been billed accordingly. I've lived here or 13 years and usually spend about £400 a year on gas, my last quarter bill stands at over £1,600. Nothing has changed in my life to effect my gas usage in the last 12 weeks. Any suggestions as to what has happened here?
I'm monitoring my meter daily now and the readings for the last 3 days has been 7783, 7784, 7785.

What are the dates and values of your last confirmed meter readings? (not estimates). This info should be on your bills.LBM 11/06/2010: DFD 30/04/2013Total repaid: £10,490.310

First look, the figure of 2,490 kWh for last winter appears rather low. I would think that your I’ll for the last two years are estimates. They will have an E next to the reading. Your latest bill is a meter read and this will be a catch up.
Without start and finish readings from your bills no one can offer any more
It is a good idea to take reading monthly and up these to our supplier. I suggest you start doing this. Also, make sure you are on the best rate. Though presently due to the price caps, SVR are the best rates.0 -
I read my meter every week and send in the readings online, I also record them in my diary so when the bill comes I can verify it is correct. Once a year we get the meter read by the meter reader who comes round. Our gas is approx 15% more than our electric. At the last bill we had £103 in our account once the bill was deducted. I guess that will go at the next bill after 3 months of heating.0

The actual read for the same period last year was 80 units and a bill of £127, and the year before that the actual read resulted in in a bill of £120. the last 6 bills have all been actual reads I can't understand what's changed this year?
I'm on the SVR0 -
As previously asked, what are the start and finish reads on the bill ? How does the closing read compare to your current reads ? Who took that closing read on the bill ?0

Not wishing to be alarmist, but I am hoping you have a Carbon Monoxide alarm in the property. I had to call my gas supplier a few years ago due to a slight smell of gas and they have some clever equipment to pinpoint any leaks. My father couldn't smell it so it could have gone unnoticed if he lived on his own.Hello

First check for meter reading errors.
Your reading last year was 80 units over 3 months - or very very roughly 1 unit a day, same as it has been reading over the last few days. Do you have your actual meter reading from a year ago? Was it nearer 7400 or 4000?But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,Had the whole of their cash in his care.
