I've started having porridge for breakfast and could do with a perfect microwave recipe. I remember years ago having really smooth porridge (pinch of salt, half milk, half water is fine) but I can't get it right.

First day it boiled over so I don't know how I could take it to work and do it as I have to make it in a fairly big bowl because of the boiling over. It also still isn't smooth even if I do it for a wee bit longer. I think about 2 mins.

So please, a perfect recipe please including quantities of oats and liquid. It's really the only thing that completely fills me up until lunch but I want to enjoy it more.

Porridge oats and water that's all you need. I put three dessertspoons of oats in a smallish pyrex bowl, water from tap, about 2 - 3 inches deep so the oats are covered and floating. Into microwave for two minutes. Watch it, and stop before it boils over.

Get it out, stir, if too thick add more water or milk, add dried fruit if preferred, back in again for another minute. Watch it again so that it doesn't boil over. Do not walk away from it. Job done, takes five minutes max. Can you keep a bowl in a cupboard at work? Then you only need to take the ingredients daily.

Ilona hit the nail, WATCH IT is the secret, not ping & forget

    And leave uncovered
I soak oats overnight which seems to give a creamier consistency
I've found stirring midway is not necessary, still works without, but does need a pause after couple of minutes to let the "lava" subside

  • Yep no stirring midway for me either. 2 tbsp of oats, enough water so some of them float. 2 mins and 10 secs on 600w. As you stir it thickens and gets creamier. Then add what you like.

Thanks for the guidance. I found a recipe on bbc good food and realise that I've not been adding enough liquid or cooking it for long enough.
Used more time and liquid this morning and it was definitely better. 5 minutes it took at 1000w.

The instant sachets I've been using (because I found some fab honey & vanilla flavour in an end-of-line shop very cheap) take 2 minutes on 800w. That's with 180ml of SS milk.

Once I finish those, I'll be using some Aldi organic oats and will experiment to get the timings correct.
I'll add apricot jam, lemon/lime curd or something similar after its cooked.

I use SS milk and cook in a Denby noodles bowl.

    It's never boiled over yet.

I use the simmer setting on the microwave for nine minutes, use a plastic soup mug. Never boils over and cooks evenly.

If I bring porridge to work for my breakfast I put the oats and sweetener in a plastic flask and add boiling water when I get here along with a splash of almond milk.

I put the lid on the flask and leave for about 15 mins, give it a stir and enjoy.

Using the quick oats for 2 mins makes sense but when I've cooked these ones for 2 mins they are nowherenear done.
I got a huge bag in Aldi for 89p the other day. Great value for money compared to the easy ones.
For people who say they can't afford breakfast this is a no brainer.

Soaked the oats overnight and still they weren't smooth. Years ago were they just cooked forever in a big pot? I really don't like the uncooked texture.

Has anyone tried putting them in a food processor and whizzing them up? Would that help do you think? I mean uncooked oats.
