Is mileage expense taxable?

  • No. You can only claim the mileage from your employer. You can claim tax relief from HMRC.

So an expenses claim of £500 would normally save you anything from £0 to £200. Often £100. Could be more than £200 in exceptional circumstances.

Agreed. Lest there is confusion I was stating what is entered on the return, not the tax claimable.
  • It seems to be a recurring theme on here, employers paying less than 45p/mile and advising staff they can claim the difference from HMRC. Without mentioning it is tax relief on the difference. Which for some low earners might be worth exactly £0
