For what it's worth, I think the idea of staying self-employed, but running your own business (cutting all links to the family business) would be the way to go.



He has the experience, presumably has contacts, and from the sound of it has ideas of where he would like to take the existing business that could be transferred to a new business.



Whatever you decide to do, you're right to move out of the family firm - sounds like the MD has run out of oomph. Time to go! And don't get caught up in family politics or start to feel sorry for them, or succumb to the 'how can you leave us' blackmail. Stay professional, even if they don't. It's your life and you have to do the best you can with it - and it sounds like you've both realised that isn't happening at the moment.
