Is tinned soup unhealthy?

Just had a debate at work about this today and someone was saying that all tinned soup is unhealthy.

I do make my own soup now and again but its always handy to have tins in as sometimes you want a quick hands on meal.

Surely it can't be all that bad?

  • Yes. It should be banned with immediate affect. Stuff that decent cream of tomato malarkey. Let’s all by that garden version of Yorkshire provident. I’m start a campaign? Join me at stuff your tomatoes dot con!

Please send all your unwanted tins to me so I can rid the shelves of them. Cream of tomato especially welcomed!

Many soups contain startling amounts of salt & or sugar. Making your own is always the more reliable way of ensuring the soup is good for your physical health.

I'd say "all tinned soup is unhealthy for your bank balance", but that if you want the comfort in a can, then a few are unlikely to kill you.
  • Soup is comforting and warming. If I don't have any soup made or defrosted then I will open a can if I really, really fancy soup. I've just had a lot of work done in my kitchen and it was not usable for parts of that time. I bought canned soup to help me through that. I'm still here.

I will confess, I'm so looking forward to HM soup again.

Certainly unhealthy for the bank balance thats for sure

I usually make soup for Mr Suki's lunch but we are having the kitchen done at the moment so cooking isn't happening at the moment. So I bought soup. £1.60 a can of big soup???? I nearly fainted on the spot

I appreciate you might not have this option but I posted earlier:

OH just had a tin of Aldi Soupreme chunky beef & vegetable soup and said it was very nice.
At 57p per tin, it's cheaper than Tesco (75p)

We don't have Aldi here and Mr Suki doesn't actually like tinned soup now, but he did used to like Big Soup when he was single and having to fend for himself

He will probably come home tomorrow and say its disgusting

Tesco's Stockwell's brand costs 25p a can if I remember correctly . So it can help your bank balance. I have tried quite a few flavours and they are OKish. I decided to have a change earlier this week and bought a can of Tesco own brand broccoli and stilton at more than twice this price. A bad choice. I usually can eat most things that others do not like, such as liver and broccoli and stilton are two of my favourite foods, but this soup tasted disgusting.

Nuff of your fancy expensive cans of soup for me and back to the 25p cans.

I make loads of soups but still buy Heinz tomato for when I've got a cold as, for me, it makes me feel better :rotfl:

Lidl do an amazing can of tomato, basil and creme fraiche which is absolutely gorgeous and has chunks of tomato in it. Can't remember the exact price but around the 60-70p mark.

Define unhealthy? Certainly it’s processed which some people object to, but it’s healthier than pie and chips. In an ideal world everything would be cooked from fresh organic ingredients, but who has the time and money for that?!
