Schools like this can be a challenge but can also offer the most rewards.

I too would say give it longer.

Are you and the other new member of staff the only ones who do your support role? If so brain storm together on what you need to do the job properly. Is it training? visiting other schools to see how they do it? access to a better room for confidential conversations etc.

You will have school systems in place, make sure that you read and understand them (interpretations can be different), find a friendly member of staff who is happy to explain the nuances and the students. Ask for a buddy - many schools offer this as support to new members of staff so that you have someone that you can answer any question too - no question is silly.

Remember quite often these kids see new staff regularly, they don't trust easily and they will test their boundaries - particularly for new staff. Keep firm, fair and calm. You are there to implement the rules but also (if it is a similar role to learning mentors) to make sure that students understand why they are being implemented as well as an ear to listen to them and provide support.

I am making some assumptions about your actual job role as there can be a wide range in this area but there are things that you can do to make it easier and more rewarding for yourself and these kids are worth the time and patience. However, it does take time.

Feel free to pm me if I can help at all.

    Cheers for all the replies.

Had existing team members speak today saying the first week we’ve had, has been totally unprofessional which in a way is a relief. Not being over sensitive...

!!!! poor, no induction, tour or staff introductions. Thrown into a !!!!!! room and left to get on with it.

I even asked to have a brief meeting with my line manager “today” but left having not spoke. Poor lady is ridiculous over worked!!

Just going to get my head down, work and manage my work as best I can, whilst from tonight, Start a fresh job search. Not going to request another meeting now to voice my concerns, just going to get on with it until I find something better. Then resign. (Or in some shock, things actually improve!!!) been the worst single 4 days I’ve had, in terms of direction I’ve had.

Thanks again all. Hopefully update in a few months, I’ve found something better or things have improved! Either way, it will be a better situation that right now!
