Online surveys and HMRC

I started doing surveys in July and have done really well, i make about anywhere from 200-300 a month. I am really confused as to whether i need to declare my earnings for survey sites i have made. 90% of my earnings have been with amazon vouchers and 10% Paypal/BACS. My husband is long term sick on ESA and i am a at home mum / carer for him as he suffers from mental health the vouchers are my treat to myself and present money for our daughter and they help so much when we are on such a small income. If i had to declare every £5 payment i have received it will be a nightmare. Am i doing wrong doing surveys and will it bite me tax wise on money i dont really have, i was hoping to find out before i need to declare? I would ring up HMRC but its the waiting time that drives me nuts.

Yes, you should declare it both for tax and means tested benefits. I saw somewhere that if your annual income from this or similar activities is more than £2500 you should be registered as self employed.

Do you have any other taxable income? It could well be that you are below the tax allowance anyway.

See https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/family/make-money-surveys/ where tax and record keeping is mentioned.
  • No i have no income i think we get around £6000 a year with my husbands illness and child stuff so not a huge income hense why i started the vouchers as being able to get things for myself on amazon and my daughter has been a godsend.

You are well below the tax threshold, so I suggest you do not worry about about HMRC as long as the income doesnt increase significantly. If you speak to them you probably should let them know.

I do not know about the effect on any means tested benefits.

Income too low as others have said. Glad you're getting a positive experience. Important warning for others thinking of doing the same work: Online surveys are always ALWAYS marketing companies building a profile of your buying habits so that they can sell your information to double glazing companies, kitchens, solar panels etc and you will get telesales calls, spam, junk mail for an eternity afterwards. The data gets sold, re sold, recycled, stolen as employees move from one company to another, put on suckers lists and so on.

Ummm what utter crap. I have been doing surveys for a couple of years and had no increase in junk mail/phone calls etc. You are aware that legit survey companies have to adhere to GDPR.

And too the op you need to let the DWP know about your earnings if you are on any means tested benefits. Does not matter what is in vouchers or cash. Still counted as income.
