Single mortgage - partner with fair credit score

Me and my husband got married in November and are now buying a house. He is able to get a single mortgage and borrow in his name. I had a help to buy ISA set up which had some money in it which is going towards the deposit. I've signed a letter saying that it's a gift and I won't request it back. His credit score is excellent and mine is fair - I have about 2000 debt on a credit card but have never missed a payment and that's the only bad thing that shows up on my credit score. I've not been mentioned on the mortgage application it's all in his name and based on his income. Will my credit score affect whether or not we are accepted?

  • We have a joint current account which we both transfer money into for our bills to come out of

Your credit history will have an impact then. There will be an association between you.

  • Oh no! I'm so worried about this. Is there any chance that we might get accepted still? If we get rejected and close the bank account and try again will that change things?
  • Also, if we are rejected will it tell us why on the rejection letter?

There's nowhere near enough information to speculate one way or the other.

You are unlikely to get a full explanation for a decline. It will simply refer you to his Equifax, Experian or Call Credit files.

  • As kingstreet said you wont get an explanation but will likely tell you to check your credit file with the credit reference agencies - Have you consulted a broker?

  • Yes my partner has seen a broker on his own and done the whole process on his own as we're not mentioning me on the mortgage. I don't think he's mentioned my score as we didn't realise it might affect it due to me not being on the mortgage.
