I definately agree with Al_Jolson, I would ask daughter to find out if the order can be changed...

I have an electric cooker and i hate it, in fact I have only had a gas cooker in two out of the 6 houses i have lived in but loved it. Only problem is we rent so can't change it ourselves, in fact I nearly didn't take our current property because of the cooker.......as said previously most houses have either gas or electric sockets I would check this out too...

dear welsh worrier - do not worry. you will get used to it fine. as an expat i have had to live in rented flats a lot, so never had a choice, and have been switching backwards and forwards a lot. i have found that both have their pros and cons.

a positive point for electric cooking is that you can have a hob going very slowly which is great for stews needing a long simmer, or cooking rice. on a gas hob you would always have to depend on a diffuser. big plus on an electric oven is that they often have a timer which is brilliant.

now that i finally live in my own house, i have chosen the best of both worlds - a cooker with 3 gas hobs and one electric. (shame they don't do those in the UK!)

good luck and let us know how you get on.

  • Thanks all.I do have both a gas connection and electric cooker point.
The thing is the all electric cookers are cheaper and seeing as daughter is getting married in January in Austria I am more than grateful for her doing this.I suppose I will get used to it.I did cook on electric when I was first married 35 years ago,but can`t remember what it was like to be honest.
We have had to say we can`t go to wedding as we can`t afford it .She was paying for it but we can`t afford new passports or for OH to lose too much work(he`s self employed). We have fallen on hard times lately due to 10 years of bad luck, one way and another.Anyway she said if it only does me for a year she`ll be happy as it is dangerous the way i have to use present stove.
She really is a model daughter and i am extremely proud of her.

Congratulations on having such a caring daughter.

My mum moved a couple of years ago and had to change from all electric to a gas hob and electric oven.
She soon adapted and can manage just as well as she did before.

I hope things start to look up for you and OH

  • Thanks whatatwit.I am sure things will get better. We are having cheap christmas this year but I am looking forward to it.We did a £10 Christmas last year and my sons and daughter found it fun to find something cheap and interesting. We (OH and myself) spent more than £10 though. This year will be more homemade things ,food and pressies. This is how we did it when kids were small.(now 33,31 and 28 plus almost 4 year old grandson)." sons live with us due to illness and circumstance(spelling).Grandson lives with us for 4 out of 7 days a week..I think ChristmAS will mean more this year.

As you say Welsh worrier, how much you spend does not guarantee a happy christmas. We all spend very little on each other, most years, OH and I don't even bother.

  • Hi All Received my new cooker yesterday although smaller than my old
one it looks really smart.Today was wonderful being able to cook
    without burning myself.
On ebig thing I noticed is that oven door did not get steamed up as on
my gas oven so i could an eye on my pie cooking.
I think I will get used to it quite quickly.
