What are our options?

My OH bought a car about 4 years ago on finance. Unfortunately it broke down in less than 6 months. He was quoted over £1k by two different garages to fix it. I urged him to contact the company claiming they were in breach of their responsibilities and hadn't provided a car in reasonable condition. Unfortunately he ignored my advice and left it in the garage until the company went to pick it up. They're charging him £1.5k, which shows as a default on his credit file.
We're looking to buy the house we currently rent. It needs quite a lot of work so we can get it for £130k.
We've saved 5% deposit.
He's on over £40k and I'm on £11k as i work part time. This is the only debt on his file and I'm debt free.
I emailed them yesterday staying they were in breach of their responsibility blah blah and i would contact the ombudsman if they did not acknowledge it but after so long, i don't know where we stand. 🤷🏼!♀️
What are our best options in getting a mortgage?
Thanks for your time

Best option is to repay the debt. It’s very, very likely that the finance company debt has nothing to do with the contract with the garage over the condition of the car.
Even if they are linked, it’s going to be hard after his actions to now claim that the garage were at fault. Not impossible, but hard.
And banks do not like lending to people who don’t repay their debts.0 -
I think you should raise a formal complaint to the Finance company. There are lots of instances where the FOS say that if a problem happened with the vehicle within the first 6 months, it was likely an inherited issue. As such, they usually make the FC pay for the repairs.
You're going to have to prove to the FC and/or FOS that the issue happened within the 6 months, so find evidence of the breakdown happening when you say it did. You'll find me sat in the corner with a pack of dry roasted and a Guinness.0 -
Thank you, i think we can prove the issues started within months0
