Injured abroad, SSP with work

I'm looking for a bit of vague advice for what to advise a friend.
He is abroad with his partner, unfortunately his partner had a bad accident and is in intensive care.
He is due back to work tomorrow, and work have told him to take all the time he needs and is staying abroad to be by their bedside.
The consulate and insurance company are obviously involved, but they aren't rich people and rely on their wages.
Obviously work have given him time off, but it's unpaid.
Would he be able to self certify from abroad for a week due to stress and emotional trauma?, Or get a sicknote from a doctor to the company from over there?
I know it's probably not possible, just looking at how my friend can stop getting into debt while abroad dealing with this terrible situation.
Thanks for any advice.

Does he have any annual leave left that he could use?

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Possibly, he is speaking to insurance company tomorrow, think they are sending someone, my friend isn't in any state to think about money at the moment, I just wanted some solutions for him.
I wasn't sure if he would be covered for staying with a partner that was injured, I hope so.

I would suggest your friend asks their employer if they could perhaps either work overtime later to repay them or have their unpaid leave recovered over several months instead of all in one go.

Their employer sounds currently sympathetic so better to try and work with them.

He can self-certify for 7 days but needs to speak to his employer to see if they will grant paid compassionate leave.
