The freshest fish is frozen, "fresh" could have been hanging around for a few days or longer, could have been defrosted and presented on ice. It's like frozen peas - frozen at source or soon after obtaining.

You often find in supermarkets with a fresh fish counter cod reduced when close to sell by date so although it's going to be hit and miss with availability you could buy that and freeze it yourself?

Don't do this, most fish on supermarket slabs is pre-frozen FAS type fish, especially cod, haddock, tuna and the like

The same with a lot of the shellfish, prawns of all types, scallops unless in the shell, mussels etc unless clearly being sold as live mussels, those dressed crabs abd cooked crabs and lobsters will be defrosted.
  • Birds Eye battered cod, according to my dad!

As you've already admitted by saying "most," it is not some blanket - you must never do this - is it.

The OP can always ask the counter staff if they are not sure. That is what I have done in the past so I know that what I have bought was fine to freeze and eat.

I don't think shellfish was mentioned by anyone in this thread.

Maybe the OP could come back and specify which 'frozen cod fillet' he/she is looking for...
    Breaded
    Battered
    Plain
  • I feel very lucky in that I have a fresh wet fish shop locally to where I live and also around half an hours drive from me is Whitstable where the fish is so fresh it's almost still wriggling on the slab It's rare I will buy fish from the supermarket apart from tinned sardines or pilchards for my store cupboard. Now and again if I take my DGS out at half term and we have a drive down to Hastings there is a super fresh fish market there and I wil spend a few pounds and stock up if I can.i'm not keen on stuff already frozen although I do freeze the fresh stuff myself
