Need a reliable external harddrive

Hi
I need a cheap-but-reliable external harddrive. About 500GB storage.
Is it best to get a solid state harddrive? Are there makes that are better than others? Cna you get a password protected one?
Im reading various articles online about external harddrives and getting overwhelmed with all the options!! I just need a reliable harddrive that Ill use to backup my desktop on a monthly basis.
(I use Windows 7).
