My brother is finally leaving home at 29 years old O_o and doesn't know how to cook, budget, etc. I want to get him a couple of books, one on general stuff and one on basic cookery (as he'll be on a low budget). Any recommendations?

Designed for students, but good for anyone on their own for the first time:
http://www.beyondbakedbeans.com/
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Beyond-Baked-Beans-Real-Students/dp/1899791833
Even if he's not veggie, veggie food can be cheaper and this book gves recipes for four with further instructions for adapting them for two or one

Delia's basic cookery book on how to boil an egg..I am the leading lady in the movie of my life

The original Delia Complete Cookery Course (the old brown book) - not "how to Cook"“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”
Amanda Lovelace, The Princess Saves Herself in this One0 -
I'd go with either Delia's Complete Cookery Course or Nigel Slater's Appetite.
29 is quite young -my sil is still living at home and she's 39 :rolleyes:0 -
My mum bought me 'How to boil an egg?' when I was a student and kept phoning her for cooking advice. That was 15 years ago and I still use it. It's great!0
