Recipe boxes

Last night I had someone from gousto knock on my door trying to sell recipe boxes to me.
Just now I’ve had an email from Morrison’s doing the same.
I’m just thinking, am I right to think I’m better off buying my own ingredients? Are recipe boxes ever worth it?
I was told for a box that would provide 6 meals it’s from £30 and £3.75 per meal. Not awful, but I’m sure I can do much better!
It’s tempting as I live alone and work long hours, but I’m also a competent cook and can throw a jacket potato together if needed

They're ridiculously expensive. I priced up the ones from Abel and Cole the other day, because I overheard someone talking about using them. Couldn't believe how much the per-meal cost was!
I can shop for two people, three meals a day plus snacks, for 7 days, for £50. Heck, I can even squeeze in a bottle of wine. Why would you spend £30 on 6 meals??No longer a spouse, or trailing, but MSE won't allow me to change my username...0 -
It's much, much cheaper to buy the ingredients yourself.
The OH tried one on a cheap two week trial and the meals were very nice, but it definitely wasn't worth it at full price.
And anybody who sends out doorknockers to get your money needs to be denied hard earned cash.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -

They are a ready meal ... that's not even ready.
If you're the sort of person that does want to experiment with food, but don't have the will/time to go ingredients hunting .... nor wish to deal with how to use up the remaining ingredients where you only used 1/10th of what you bought, they can be "handy".
But, they are an expensive way to buy food.....0 -
I think they do have there place. If there are people who buy takeaways all the time, or spend a small fortune on buying pre-packaged, pre-prepared groceries, then it can be a way of getting people cooking and giving them some confidence in the kitchen.0

I think these do have their place if you aren't confident in the kitchen or want to try something that uses ingredients you might not have and might struggle to use up but I'd never pay full price for them as there are lots of offers about if you have a look online. My son (who used to be chef so a very competent cook) got a voucher that gave 3 meals for2 for £10 and used it try a few new-to-him recipes. As they come with detailed instructions, he has kept them and now makes the ones he likes from scratch. He weighed the ingredients so he could work out what went in them.0 -
I suppose it comes down to whether your priority is to save money or to save time.
At some periods of my life these recipe boxes would have been something I'd have considered. To be able to choose different recipes and have ingredients delivered would have been a boon when I was working all hours.Early retired - 18th December 2014
