Prize sent twice...

Evening all. I won a competition late last year and the prize (worth a few hundred pounds) was posted out to me in the new year, great.

However, a week later, I received the same prize in the post again!

No contact has been made as yet - should I hold on to it and wait to see if they make contact, or just send it back?

I know when bought items are received they shouldn’t be kept, but not sure about competition prizes...

Thanks!

I had the same thing a while back, I contacted them and they sent a courier to collect. I think the same applies to competition prizes - it's not yours, it's a mistake, so to keep it would be wrong.
    TOP MONEYSAVING TIP

Make your own Pot Noodles using a flower pot, sawdust and some old shoe laces. Pour in boiling water, stir then allow to stand for two minutes before taking one mouthful, and throwing away. Just like the real thing!

Firstly - check that the comp wasn't to win two or that you haven't won the same prize from two different competitions - both can happen.

Otherwise, let them know that you have received two and that they can make arrangements to collect one of them from you, or send you the cost of returning the item by post. Give them 21 days to make arrangements or you will dispose of the item.

Someone else may be waiting for their prize, so you should not just keep it without letting them know.

  • That happened to me for a prize worth £35, as it was a multiple giveaway I presumed I had won twice so I didn’t say anything until they emailed me to ask me to post it to someone else!

If it was worth a few hundred pounds I would contact the company and let them know because they have been fair enough to give you the prize in the first place.

Is there a chance you could have won another competition?

I won a goodybag once and received it a day after they emailed me, then received another a few days later. When I checked the letter inside they were from different companies, and after a quick search on here I realised I'd entered 4 different competitions that had the goodybag as a prize, and I'd won 2 of them!
    Thanks to all posters :A
  • This happened to me once, I contacted them and let them know, they said thanks for your honesty, you can give one to a friend!
  • Same thing happened to me, it wasn't a really expensive prize - pair of Slydes, but I contacted the company and said I could keep both.
Thanks to all those that post.

I've had 2 before of the same thing and just kept both and never heard anything. They were items worth approx. 65-70 quid. I'm a bad person though ha ha ;-)

Check it came from the same people, ie, it's not two separate competitions / prizes ... if it's the same prize sent twice, then email them ... if you keep it, technically it's theft since it's not really "unsolicited goods" and they can come after you for up to six years to get it back.

Chances are they'll just tell you to keep it anyway ... Karma, what goes around comes around ... do the right thing :)
