Is my girlfriend due a tax rebate or refund?

in Cutting tax
Hi,
My girlfriend moved to the UK and started working full time (and, of course, paying tax) in July 2006. She has been working from then up until now. She'll be leaving the UK at the end of November and probably won't be back until February.
My question is, is she entitled to some kind of tax rebate/refund (I'm not even sure of the correct terminology) for the following periods and reasons:
2006/2007 tax year: because she only started working in July, and hence didn't work a full tax year
2007/2008 tax year: because she will be away for two months (December/January) and hence won't have worked a full tax year
How does she go about finding out if she's due a refund and, if so, how much it is? How does she apply for the refund?
Thanks in advance for your help.

You would need to give some figures for anyone to advise on this. If she is working full time then I doubt it. As long as her code number was correct the tax deducted should be pretty spot on.
You can check out the allowances and tax bands for the various years on the HMRCweb site and calculate what she should have paid.0 -
Not much detail here to go on but
if her final tax code was 503L for 2006-7 then her tax is probably correct.
if she write to the HMRC saying she won't be working again this tax year then they will give her a refund.
alternatively if she is coming back and works in February, she will automatically have her tax adjusted by her new employer.0 -
She needs to complete a form P87 relating to when she entered the UK and a form P85 when she leaves - you send the latter form with her P45 - a letter isnt good enough.£705,000 raised by client groups in the past 18 mths :beer:0

If she is only leaving the UK for 2 months in the middle of the tax year we would normally advise she holds on to the P45 from her last job and put in a claim at the end of the tax year.
This is to avoid the situation whereby she gets a refund then doesn't pay enough tax from the date of return until the end of the same tax year and has to repay money she was incorrectly refunded. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. We do not know if girlfriend was UK resident at all or her nationality or present country of residence.
She may be taxable in another country on UK earnings or/and not entitled to a refund if she does not qualify for a personal allowance.0
