Quick answer needed - will these be ok?

Have a casserole in the oven (beef and cranberry, the cranberry goes in at the end) and want to use some potato croquettes I found in the fridge. BUT one packet has a use by date of yesterday and one for today. The older packet smells ok, and I can't see anything in the ingredients that would go off fast, but DH is funny like that ... SHould it be ok?

I'd use them! Can I have the casserole recipe - I have some cranberries in my freezer from last year, and would like to use them before Christmas :rotfl: :rotfl:

THis used cranberry sauce, rather than fresh/frozen cranberries. it's just stirred into a bog standard beef casserole made with onions, stock and a bit of red wine at the very end. I'll let you know whether the combination works, though, cos I'm sure that there would be some way of doing it with real cranberries! (stir in cooked cranberries and some caramelised onions at the end?)Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

They'll be fine.....after all what did people do before 'use by dates' were introduced... if it looked and smelt OK we ate it!0

It'll be absolutely fine! We're all too hung up on these dates now. I overbought yoghurts recently and forgot one set of 6 in fridge in garage......found them about 5 days beyond their set date. Smelt and tasted then ate quite happily over the next three days. Figured I'd soon taste it if there was a problem!Resolution:

Oh do climb up here on my hobby horse with me:D This is one of my pet hates, the thinking that food goes *toxic* on the stroke of midnight on its use by date. It's a wonder our grandparents and especially great grandparents ever survived without these dates:rolleyes: And I know they didn't have so much in the way of processed food, but then their lettuces also didn't come with a use by date. Nor their potatoes, carrots, flour, apples, milk(no one can doubt when that's gone off!!!)etc etc:rotfl:You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
Well, we ate them. No-one except me knew which ones had a UBD of 9th rather than 10th November! If anyone gets sick ...
Btw, cranberry sauce in a beef casserole works rather well. I'll do it again.Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000 -

Very clever!!! So if anyone does get sick you'll know it wasn't psychosomatic;) I'm sure they'll be absolutely fine:DYou never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
You'll all be fine - what is there in croquettes to go off - just don't feel obliged to confess!!!!! - otherwise everyone will suddenly get psychosomatic tummyaches!“the princess jumped from the tower & she learned that she could fly all along. she never needed those wings.”

I was feeling a bit sensitive cos DH had food poisoning earlier in the week (caused by a dodgy sausage at the HBOS staff canteen!). There is a ban on using the sausages from the freezer for a few weeks. He has always been stricter about dates than me, so I have to be careful what I tell him! He threw out a lovely bit of brie cos it was two weeks past the USD: but surely brie would just get smellier and runnier and more perfect!!Mortgage started on 22.5.09 : £129,600Overpayments to date: £3000June grocery challenge: 400/6000

I too have used yogurts past their dates and been fine. Have heard according to a friend of a friend who works in a supermarket that dairy products are safe for two weeks past their dates, and other foods a week. It's a plot to make us chuck out and buy more I think!
My DH's father was a butcher, and his family used to use up all the out of date pies and meat - they're all still here to tell the tale!0
