Help - Nibble Emergency !!

Hi, we've just been invited round to the neighbours who are having a belated bonfire party tonight, and have been asked to bring round some nibbles . I've got 2 hours to come up with something - any suggestions please ???

  • I love last minute invitations! How about cheese straws. You can make them into biscuits, if you like.

    Enjoy the party, Penny. x

Do you have any cashew nuts? Lovely roasted in a little oil with some tamari sauce.

Go totally retro and make a cheese and pineapple hedgehog.

P.S. I think it's totally unfair to invite you at such short notice AND expect you to bring something to eat. Very inconsiderate.

Sesame toast - toast one side of the bread then spread untoasted side with a little butter and sprinkle sesame seeds onto the butter then toast under the grill and cut into strips for serving.

Ooh, another toast type thing is caper toast. Mash capers into some butter, then spread on bread and bake in oven for 10 minutes or so until melted and a bit of crispy. Nice with soup.

I take it that you are eating outdoors? If not, I would whiz some tinned beans and stuff to make a dip, and chop up some veges to dip into it.

  • If you can get hold of a small amount of smoked salmon or smoked mackeral, whizz it up with some cream cheese, lemon juice and black pepper to make pate and serve it on brown bread triangles.

 got a jar of olives?

pour of the brine, add olive oil, dried mixed herbs and a squeeze of lemon juice, then leave and take them round.. posh olives quick style!

or just crisps - kettle chips types or tortilla chips

or hm houmous made with a jar of chick peas, some oil, lemon juice and half a clove of garlic ..just whizz it all together!( 1tbs tahini if you have it, not essential in an emergency!)

  • Or if you have any puff pastry in the freezer - defrost, roll out, spread with pesto, roll up like pinwheel, cut thin slices and bake.

    Or cheesy crisps:
    3.5oz cheese, grated
2 small packets plain crisps (or any other in emergency)
    2.5oz flour
1 tsp mustard powder (or mustard)
    2.5oz butter/marg

Crush crisps. Melt marg. Mix all together. Make walnut size balls on baking sheet - flatten slightly. Bake at 180C for about 10mins till golden brown. Gorgeous warm from oven but nice cold - and I always have people thinking they come from very posh shop!!
