Thank you all - some great advice!0

Best rice is put into a sieve, then rinsed and rubbed between your fingers and then left to sit for a while before tipping into the pan and water added (either method - 2:1 in volume or to your first knuckle). Then once it is boiling and there are little dents all over the surface, put the lid on and turn the heat off.
And, if you have sticky rice/residue left in the pan, leave it on the side overnight to dry out rather than washing it up immediately. You'll be able to quickly swipe it into the bin in the morning and then it's just a quick clean.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
My basmati rice always ends up soggy and mushy - what am I doing wrong?! Any foolproof methods please?
ALWAYS USE LONG GRAIN. Long grain rice is far cheaper!
1/4 cup per per person. I cup water per person.
Boil water. Add rice. Simmer good for twelve to fifteen minutes
Drain. Rinse with boiling water.

Always rinse the rice in cold water before putting into boiling water. Give it a very good rinse. Stir once or twice to ensure no rice stuck to the bottom. Let it do its thing until about 2-3 minutes before the end of the recommended cooking time. Drain and leave with the lid on for a further 2-3 mins. Fork and serve

I use the Delia Smith method for perfect rice and I cook it in a wok. HTHFailure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently0

My method? 1 (small) cup rice, 2 cups cold water - enough for 3 people.
Put rice & water into pan with good fitting lid, bring to boil, boil for 1 minute, then turn off. Leave on the hob, do not remove lid for 20 mins - give it a stir and bingo - nice fluffy rice!0
