Bargain Slow Cookers

Hi, hope I have posted this in the right place, sorry if I haven't.
I have just got back from our local town and feeling all inspired by the threads about slow cookers, I thought I would have a look around. The first one I saw was in a very unlikely shop........Roseby's!!! They had a lovely one in there for £19.99, it was 5.5 I think, oval shape and it had a signature of one of the tv Chef's on it......I think it might have been somebody Rankin??? It seemed a real bargain. Then I went into Robert Dyas and they had two or three different ones in there which were also reduced down to £20 mark, one make I remember was Frigidaire and they had 3.5 and 5.5 ones.
I got out my old Tower one this morning and am trying a beef casserole in that today. Its years since I have used it and I do not have the instructions any more. It's beenon since 10am on high, but the veg is still hard :rotfl: . What did I do wrong?? lol

Durabrand Slow cooker 1.8L
These are £7 in ASDA i got one last week and it was good, ok if you havent got a big family:D0 -
You need to pre-cook everything, not just the meat. At this stage you might need to fish out the veggies and nuke them0

I don't understand the problem with the veggies. I just bung big chunks of carrot in mine along with the browned meat, and other veggies, add a tin or 2 of tomatoes and a stock cube, then leave on auto for the day.
As for cheap scs, I got one for my dd from freecycle. A lot of people have them, but don't use them, so it could be worth putting a request on freecycle.Official DFW Nerd Club - Member # 593 - Proud To Be Dealing With My Debts!0 -
I got a slow cooker from argos that cost me £22.64. That was for a 6.5L Morphy Richards one so I think I did very well for myself. It is very good and I usualy eat most of what I put in and only leave 1 portion most of the time
(I have a healthy appitite after work and college
). I put all the veggie in with a sauce and water (aswell as spices and/or herbs) and put it on low from when I leave to when I get back so about 8-10 hours. No problems with the veg so far
. I don't pre-cook any of it at all and all I really put in it are veggies as I'm vegan :rotfl: .
I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0 -

I bought a SC from Argos and had that problem, 11 hours and the veg were still hard, and they were only 1-1.5cm cubes.
Following advice in here I took it back for a replacement and the new one cooks veg great.
I reckon your SC isn't getting hot enough to cook the veg.0 -
If you have a TJ Hughs near you, I got my 6.5l Morphy Richards for £20.00.0

I bought the cheapo tesco one 3.5 litre I think. It seems to give out a lot of heat to the kitchen and isn't insulated so I guess= inefficient. Having said that it cooks fine and heats up a lot quicker than my small 30 year old one.Just call me Nodwah the thread killer0
