It is about to drop off

Hi guys,
Just looking for a little advice on the best course of action.

I have a fair few "minor" debts nothing substantial, nothing secured etc

I have checked my credit report using a free trial on checkmy file I think it was and some of these it says will stop being reported in the early part of this year. I am wanting to get a hold of my finances and sort myself out, something about turning 30 makes me want to get my act together, and wondered whether it was worth approaching these to make an offer of repayment (which would take me a while, I am the sole earner in the household with three children and I do not earn a lot) or do I just wait until that time is up and they are statute barred?

Hi, Just dropped in to say good luck and you should use Noddle.co.uk as they give you access to your credit report for free all the time. Just incase you forget to cancel your Check My File subscription and end up paying them.
  • Thanks, I am registered with noddle but I knew there were things that should be on there which did not show on noddle. I have already cancelled I just took notes of amounts, who to etc and where possible reference numbers because I did the typical if it is in the bin it cannot bother me

Are you being chased for any of these debts? The worry is that a company will try to seek a CCJ if they are approaching being statute barred. When was the last time you paid anything to the debts?

  • To be honest, I have never paid anything to them and I have not received a letter for at least 4 years if not more. 2 of them are with British Gas which are due to fall off in March another 1 is 3 mobile and I can't remember the other at the moment but most likely around that time, telecoms provider I should imagine.

I just wasn't sure if I should risk not paying them and waiting for them to drop off or be stuck paying them for longer because any payments I could make would be minimal.

Before you decide to take the route of letting them drop off, take a few minutes to work out if you'll find in the future that this bothers you - some people are absolutely fine with this approach, others find that it "hangs over them" and leaves them feeling guilty - and if so, if they are as you have said just minor sums then you may well do better coming to an agreement to pay them off. Everyone is different on this so it's worth giving it some thought.
