Query regarding national insurance deductions

Hi,

I m a non UK resident and I have been in tier 2 ICT short term Visa from October 2016 to October 2017. And I was abroad for more than 6 months and came to UK in May 2018 in tier 2 ICT long term Visa.

I heard that national insurance contribution will not happen for the first year. Deductions will happen from the second year onwards. Currently national insurance is not deducted from my salary.

And my friends are saying if you are abroad for more than 6 months. NI will not be deducted.

Should I be worried for not deducting national insurance ? I have searched online and I couldn't find the revelant answers. Can someone please help me on this query

Thanks,
Gayathri
