Lets compile a list of Childrens Party Games.....

It would be nice to have a list of all the old favourites as well as some brand new ideas so that we can all refer back to them when planning a childrens party. There are so many packages and books knocking around on the internet so we could list all of our ideas and the ganes we play on here and it would help with the planning if having a party.

Write down the game, age approprate for and what you need to be able to play the game.

I've found some great ones while trawling the internet but it would be nice to get ideas from eveyone else so we all have one place to refer back to. I know there are the usual ones like Musical Chairs and Musical Bumps but anything a little different would be great.

Blue monkey this is a great money saving idea. One I do with my kids which I started at Brownies when I was Tawny Owl years ago...
    The Queens' Jewels.
Object: to collect ingredients for the witches' potions to exchange with the witch so that she will release the Queens' Jewels ( which the nasty witch has stolen).
Materials: 4 lists of potion ingredients, each different and containing approx 6 ingredients (we had 4 sixes in our pack but you could vary this). 24 picture of ingredients. We had them laminated as we played over again but for a one-off game you could just pop pictures onto card or paper, even the back of a cereal box. If you're short of time simply write the ingredient name on paper.
24 items of jewellery. Again, we had them laminated but could be simplified or printouts of real jewellery from the net.
Envelopes, bags, pouches, box or container of some kind to keep either ingredients or jewels.
Treats or prizes from the queen.

    How to play:
Before the party hide the ingredients around the party room using bluetac or sellotape. Split children into teams and set them off hunting. When they find the ingredient they can,
    1. take straight to whoever is being the witch who can release one item of jewellery,
    2. collect in the container and take all items to the witch when all items from the list are collected
    3. if it isn't an item from their list pop it back where it was found.

When a team has all the jewels they give them to the queen who releases the prize.

We had24 items of jewellery to make the game longer, each potion ingredient needing to be exchanged for a jewel and the jewel given to the queen and the queen sending the little brownies off to find more....to make it nice and long and to include everyone in the game.

You could have teams collect the lot of ingredients and exchange for just one piece of jewellery which would cut down the prep time.
The first team could win a prize OR it could be a good idea to play it just before food time and the winners get the magic key to open the room to the Queens' feast or it could be a way to realease party bags if you do them.

    List of potion ingredients:
    bats eyes,
    frogs' breath,
    toad slime,
    fairy dreams,
    magic dust,
    spiders' web,
    frogspawn,
    childrens' wish,
    ogre bogey,
    hairy wart,
    troll toenails,
    pheonix feather,
    morning mist,
    dragon scales,
    a babys' smile
    a giants' whizzpop :-)
    snail slime
    legs from a daddy-long-legs
    toad bumps
    curl from a beautiful girl
    tail from a yellow newt
    a giggle
    mouse ears
    a magic bean

Is great fun and works for a wide age group. Can be made as fancy as you like with adults dressing up, making some kind of couldron, acting the parts etc.

Hope that's the kind of thing you were looking for and that it makes sense :-),

  • Just done a smaller kiddies version of this as my party is tomorrow, never really thought of it before but I am printing off 24 pictures of birthday cakes and will pin them to walls, doors, etc... the kids won;t take much notice of them as they'll think it is birthday decorations and, for the last game, the kids can go off and find all 24 of them and bring them all back to me. Their 'reward' for finding them all is their party bags. Should kill 10 minutes!! Thank you for the inspiration.

The above game is wonderful and not one I have seen elsewhere when looking, what a wonderful idea.
  • This sounded a very promising thread, as I was searching for ideas for my daughter's party. Rather disappointing to find so little in it. So I thought it was well worth a 'bump', : )

will pop in later with my game
    great idea this

  • I don't really know what you would call this game, but we played it in the Brownies and Guides when I was young:D .

Seat everybody in a circle. In the centre of the circle put a small table and chair and on the table put a large slab of chocolate, a knife and fork and several items of clothing which everyone would fit into - eg hat, scarf, jumper, big pair of gloves that sort of thing. (gloves are necessary)
When the game starts each person takes it in turns to roll a dice and whenever someone rolls a 6 they go to the table, dress in the clothes and sit at the table (must do all these things) then use the knife and fork to cut a piece of chocolate. They can keep eating chocolate until someone else rolls a 6. Often several sixes would be rolled in quick succession and the "winners" would barely have got dressed before they had to get undressed again. The ill fitting clothes made it hard to cut the chocolate and it was fun (and funny) to watch others and be involved too.
Obviously not really suitable for youngsters with the cutlery, but I think there are probably plenty of games for them, it is the older kids that are difficult to entertain at parties.

    HTH someone,
    MrsB.

    It's only a game

A good one for calming wild children down is "sleeping lions". Just get all of them to lie down on the floor and the aim is for them to stay quiet and still. You can tell them jokes or do what parents do - you know, oh is that a horn growing out of your back? sort of thing. If they giggle or move they're out and can join you in trying to get the rest to move. It usually ends with tickling, but earns you a couple of minutes peace!!!

The mummy game. Teams of 2/3. One stands still and the others wrap them up in loo roll to turn them into a mummy. They have a set length of time to get as much of their friend covered as possible.

I remember playing the chocolate eating game mentioned before.

Will have a think to see if I can remember anymore

  • I remember a game at Brownies where we were given an old match box and told to come back with it full of items. The person with the most items 'won'. We filled them with things like paperclips, a hair, a grain of sand, a grain of rice etc. Not really a party game but thought it would bump the thread. :-)
  • There's a pretty good selection on here;

  • Haylibo that is a fantastic game and I will be pinching it for our Brownies. May well be even better in summer when they can use the outdoor as well as indoor space.
    Loving the dtd thread. x
