Fishing expedition. See who applies/what their current earnings are and react accordingly.
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

Not necessarily. Professional level jobs (pay typically £40-60k) almost never have the salaries in the advert as the pay will depend on the quality and experience of the applicants as well as their negotiating skills.

I can't say I agree. I find a lot of professional jobs advertise the salary, normally as it arrives via a recruitment agent. For those that don't the salary has always been pretty poor in my experience.

The first thing I ask the agent is what is the salary - not going to waste mine or their time applying for a role where the salary is not what I want!

If they will not tell me, then I don't bother applying.

Same if they won't tell me the company I am applying for!

I'm currently applying for a job that asks both what my current salary is and what my wanted salary is. Do I aim high in the expectation they'll offer something more realistic, or just put down the realistic figure straight away. The problem could be that my current wage is significantly lower than I'd be asking for as I'm currently hugely underpaid for what I do.
