new to all this, do you have a system?

Hello new to comping but not to MSE been around over 7 years but for the life of me could not get in to my old account!!

anyhow i thought this would be fun to do in my spare time, i have read all the info on this section and found it fantastic and a big thank you to anyone who took the time to write and add that information and of course who add any comps to the site!!

so i started with gusto! went back on the display started at the end picked page 100 and was just happily working my way through, since yesterday the kids have touched the laptop and everything was shut down :( lost my place and even now if i put page 98 where i was everything has changed!! big sigh and i have started at page 100 again!

but do any of you care to share your strategy for knowing where you are and keeping on top of what you do!!

thank all and good luck

The green thanks tick on an actual post are great to show what you hsve entered. Likewise the red cross box is useful to mark what you arent entering. That way next time you log in you can see the green and red mark and see what you still need to look at

  • I enter by end date, so that way I don't miss out on anything before it expires. This thread has a button to sort by end date:

Enter as added or drop into a bookmark folder to enter/look at more closely later - That way there is no need to spend time changing the order of the board, miss out on competitions that close early, miss out on competitions posted after you have already entered a particular date and you avoid the week/month end closing date peaks.

I "green tick" when I enter but "red cross" everything as I see it whether it is entered, saved for later or ignored so I always know what I have seen.

Most importantly, unless your time is both unlimited and worth very little, set some standards so the number of competitions you enter generally fits into the time you have/want to make available - so don't enter for a sheet of recycled toilet tissue when there a whole roll is available to win elsewhere or enter for a bottle of booze if there are £1,000 cash prizes you haven't entered yet etc (This is another thing that is easier to do using the Board "as added" rather than sorting by date)

Although generally you will have more chance of actually winning that bottle of booze or the single sheet of recycled toilet tissue over the £1000 because there will be less entries to those competitions, it's all a balance ... I think the important thing is to not enter for stuff you have no use for, the comping fairy only comes round every so often, better that she comes when you've entered for stuff you want as opposed to that Pile of horse food you entered for when you live in London, don't have a horse and don't know anyone even remotely interested in horses :)
