Hello,

I moved into my current accommodation in July 2018. It is location in South Oxfordshire and sits in council tax band B (I know this band to be correct) and I believe I am currently over paying for my council tax.

For 2018/2019 financial year, council tax equates to a total £1428.52 for the full year (according to the district council website). I have applied and been granted single occupancy discount so have received a reduction of 25% discount to my overall bill totalling £1071.39

However, from the period of 31.07.2018-31.03.2019 I have been billed £957.67.
When the single occupancy discount was taken off, I owe a total £718.25.

*edit* I had a one off payment of £118.25 on 11.09.2018 and been making consistent payments of £120 from 01.10.2018 and will have my last payment due on 01.02.2019

Is there some reason other than an error from the local council to be charged so much for the 6 month period?

Thank you in advance

the numbers look correct approximately - 31.07.2018-31.03.2019 is 8 months not 6. Take your totals and divide by 12 and multiply by 8 and you get a figure within a few £ (due it being actually a daily rate)

When you work out the daily rate the amount the council are charging looks fine to me.

technically council tax is a charge per day
    http://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1992/14/section/2

in case maths is not your strong point:
    £1,071.39/365 days = £2.935 per day

    31/7/18 - 31/3/19 = 243 days

    243 x 2.935 = £713.21
your charge will be rounded differently by the council's computer

I suspect the confusion arises from the fact that the OP talks about 6 months rather that 8, they're probably not accounting for Feb and Mar as not being 'free months'
