She got an updated pension forecast and it confirms what everybody said. So she wants to pay three years of class 3 contributions: 2016-17, 2017-18 and 2018-19. The obvious way, it seems to me, is to send a cheque to HMRC.

But I can't find anything that tells me how much to make the cheque out for. Are the annual class 3 rates published anywhere, please? I can find the weekly rates, but nothing tells me how many weeks there are in a year for this purpose.
    x52 the weekly rate so £733.20 £741.00 and £761.80

The important one to get done is 16-17 as that goes up to £780 after April 5th.
  • If she was doing some dog walking or whatever say selling tat on ebay or at a local car boot sale and earned less than £1,000 from this work work in this tax year.

You can fill in a tax return for her and declare the small earnings which there is no tax on via the selfemployed page in her April 2019 tax return.

You can then click the box to pay Class 2 NI for the 2018/2019 tax year, total cost approx £153.40, 52 x £2.95.

There will be instructions on how to do that when you finish the return.

Thanks all. We're lucky enough to be able to write a cheque for the three years, so the cheque is now in the post.

Hopefully you have stated exactly which years you wish to pay for?
  • Follow-up question. We posted the cheque on 19 Jan and the DWP cashed it a week ago. My wife now would like to know when she will get the acknowledgment/receipt that she asked for to confirm that the payment was applied to the correct years. I haven't found any published SLA. Does anybody know how long they normally take to reply after they've taken the payment, please?
