To include on CV or not

Really huge sympathies to you both.
Just my opinion but from reviewing a lot of CVs as part of my role I would advise similar to Savvy Sue's advise.... something like "Career break due to personal circumstances" I've seen this before and thought it was a good explanation of a gap on CV.
If the time period was left completely blank I would question if there was something amiss with the CV and be less inclined to invite to interview if there were other strong CV's in the mix.
May or may not be the right way to review but if the employer has a large amount of CVs to review better to explain a little and show it wasn't due to being unable to find work.Santander 0% £1,529.94
Sainsbury's 0% £4,371.31

Thanks yes I totally agree with you.

Career break due to personal circumstances" could mean literally anything, and potentially could lead to the person reviewing your cv wondering what it was and how justified (ie. are you a bit flakey and likely to be disappearing off again for some spurious reason).
I think I'd go for "career break due to bereavement". It gives enough information to generate some empathy and understanding, but doesn't put your life story on display to all and sundry.
As others have said, the prospective employer has absolutely no right to know or ask, but sometimes a little information can be helpful.
All the best.0
