The length of service is the problem here.

If it's a UK passport then your employer does not need to do a further check. The problem is that you can't claim unfair dismissal if you do not provide the passport and they sack you because of it as you don't have two years' service.

When I started a job last year I was asked to produce ID as part of the process. I gave them a copy of my Passport (did you provide the original passport and they made the copy, noting who had seen the original and when or was it just a copy you made?
and proof of my National Insurance number. All was good.

    My Passport expires next month.

Today I got an email out of the blue from HR. They'd noticed that my Passport expires next month so they want a copy of the new Passport.

Surely this is un-necessary? Why do they need a copy of my new Passport? I haven't actually applied for a new one yet as I have no plans to go abroad and at the moment could do without spending the money on replacing it at the moment. I'm more inclined to wait A until i'm closer to a time when i'm likely to use it and B when I've got £85 to spend.

  • Wow, great to see a discussion going on this. I was away with work for a couple of days.

General Grant - they saw it and took the copies themselves.

Funnily enough the day after getting the email I had a call from them asking if I got the email and what I was doing about it. After a few minutes of being on the phone and me repeatedly asking the question about why they needed this when my existing passport would be perfectly acceptable for the purpose regardless of it's expiration she was unable to give me an answer. But the conversation was left open ended.

I have no problem "rocking the boat" and I just get really annoyed with companies demanding excess documents and paperwork that are unnecessary. We give away too much information IMO as it is so regardless of who it is or why they want it, I always ask questions like i'm sure many others do. My employment isn't at risk with annoying them either as it's not a traditional employer-employee relationship.
