Pension at work with accommodation

Hello,
Where I work I pay for accommodation at work through my gross wage; I am a greenkeeper and this is tax exempt under the HS202.
I then get a pension based on my 'gross' salary - which is the post accommodation salary -
For example I earn £1000, then my accommodation is taken of e.g £200 - so then I get my payslip saying £800 then the pension is taken of the £800 figure.
Should it not be £1000 less pension, then the flat - then taxed, as the flat is tax exempt anyway?
I am the only member of staff in this position and when I questioned my employer about this they said I can't get it on my 'actual' salary due to the accommodation. Obviously if I did not have accommodation I would get my pension on the full £1000 (everyone else gets its on their gross salary.)
Not really where else to look, so any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I think it's because you get tax relief on your pension contributions
You pay no tax on your accommodation cost so effectively your gross salary is £800 (there's no difference between your employer paying you £800 & throwing in the accommodation for free or paying you £1000 & deducting £200 before tax & ni is calculated)0
