Can employer change agreed changes?

Hi all, quick question. My husband asked his employer a few months ago if he could go down from 5 days a week to 4 days a week, he filled in paperwork and said he would start in February as they needed 3 months. Over a month ago the main manager told the site manager & supervisor ( above site manager) to tell my husband that they would trial it and he could start from 6th January, this Monday, however he received a text tonight from the supervisor saying his t&c's haven't been sorted and is needed in on Monday. Can they do this? Nothing signed just verbally told.
Many thanks

In a word 'Yes'. It's extremely poor organisation on the part of management to cancel/defer the start at this late point, but variations in working hours generally have a clause in there that they will be reviewed on a regular basis and can be withdrawn at any time in the case of a business need being identified.
In your husband's situation I would be inclined to text back and say you have already made arrangements for this Monday, as you weren't expecting to work, will be in Tuesday to discuss the situation.

In your husband's situation I would be included to text back and go along with the request/instruction to keep the employer on side!
Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!

    Yes they can do that.

Poor form so late, but only your husband knows how the company might react to refusal.

Should not cause a problem in a reasonable company since they gave him 0 working days notice if he does not go in one time. But again see above!

If he does want to be "difficult", (purely in the companys eyes if they were to see it that way) what documentation does he have for proof if he needs to take action? (at which point it would be assumed he would be no longer employed, but again I have no idea how this company treat staff).

Hi all, thanks for your answers. We thought that would be the case but wanted to check. He is going to ask them to sort his t&c's this week.
    Thanks again.
