Oh - also expect them to specifically contact your previous employer for absence records, as that's what I'd do if someone called in sick on day one. As you have a reliable work history this could well work in your favour (you may even want to nudge them towards it?).

If possible, I would suggest going to work on Monday, if only for your new boss to be able to see for themself just how ill you are. Take the med cert in with you as supporting evidence from the GP.
...and make yourself really popular by dishing out whatever you've got. Even if you're not still infectious, you'll get the blame for any bugs your new colleagues develop in the next few weeks.
You're feeling low and miserable, but get a grip: what would you tell a friend in this situation? Take the necessary time off to recover and if you're not better by Monday (and you have certainly laid on with a trowel how ill you feel, which I'm sure you do), ring and explain. Don't whatever you do rely on an e-mail, which really would look like a cop-out.Googling on your question might have been both quicker and easier, if you're only after simple facts rather than opinions!0 -
The NHS is a fair employer with national employment guidelines. If you have a three month probation period expect it to start from when you return to work but you will be given a chance to prove your worth.0

My OH (and I, and the baby) all got norovirus/food poisoning in the early hours of the morning the day he was due to start a new job. It was full on coming out both ends, you know the drill, it wasn't possible to go in. He sent a long grovelling email sometime very early in the morning explaining how bad it was and how sorry he was. They were fine about it (though they did say there was no need to be quite so detailed :rotfl:) Honestly it probably just depends on the boss and the culture of the company/department. But if you can't go, you can't, there isn't much anyone can do about it.0
