Did you like the bolognese? Maybe your husband's tastes just don't extend to lentils? What proportion of lentils / mince did you use? If you're used to eating traditional bolognese you might want to start with a very small proportion of lentils to mince and gradually increase the amount.0

Did you tell him there were lentils in it? I find that a few fibs go a long way in making veggie and vegan things perfectly acceptable0

Which lentils did you use? That's Numberwang!0

Did you add lentils to ordinary bolognese or did you make it all from lentils IYSWIM? I make a lentil bolognese that I love but DH only tolerates. Never added them to a meat version though.0

I don't eat meat but do eat lots of lentils. If you used red lentils, it might have been a bit mushy. Brown or green ones keep their shape better and so would be better hidden among the rest of the ingredients.May all your dots fall silently to the ground.0

I've tried red lentils GR and they didn't go down well at all. It put me off trying the green -didn't know there was brown - lentils. There is something delicious about writing the first words of a story. You never quite know where they'll take you - Beatrix Potter0 -
Brown lentils are whole lentils (red lentils are split and have the 'skin' removed). Another type are puy lentils - these are a sort of bluey grey and they never go mushy - which can be used in salads as well as the usual lentil recipes.
I would have thought that a few red lentils would be the best bet as an introduction into a sauce which also contains mince. They will cook down to a mushy puree which can be hidden very easily.
I agree with floyd that honesty is not alway the best policy when introducing a new ingredient, especially a money saving one!0 -
Yes, hide them!
I have started sneaking beans and pulses into OH's food, for his health and our wealth. I am trying to use meat as a flavouring rather than the whole meal deal. Whatever I cook him (chilli, curry, soup, whatever), I chuck in a handful or two of cooked pulses. We like the texture of whole beans/lentils, but you can blend them up to a puree to disguise them even more.0 -
my oh didn`t even notice he was eating red lentils in spag bol, i soaked half a mug overnight and they doubled in size, then boiled them for 15 mins, then i added them to a big spag bol i was doing in the slowcooker and then left it to do its thing for another 3/4 hours. if i hadn`t of made it myself i wouldn`t really of noticed they were there either, i find they do need cooking for quite a while to make them palatable but they certainly do bulk up the spag bol and make it go much further. i grate a couple of carrots in as well....angchrisproper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance!Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat moneyquote from an american indian.0

They were the red type, although I didn't put many in.....and no I didn't tell, but even the kids realised something had changed and didn't want to eat it.... I think I have been spoiling them all lol
I think i'll ruin meals more often. DH decided to make his own tomato sauce and served it with pasta and tuna..It was lovely. He used a sit called video jug which showed step by step how to do it, I did have to stay close to offer a v. small hand now and then.
He says he will make it for us all another night, and he has even earmarked a few other recipes to try.... Good old lentils they have done me the world of good.
