TRAIN - Fareham to Manchester Airport and Return

I suppose I'm being a bit lazy here.

Travelling from Fareham [Hampshire] to Manchester Airport on 11 June, and returning on 18 June.

I want to avoid London, and will change trains probably at Winchester, Birmingham and Manchester Piccadilly.

I imagine this involves more than one Network.

I realise I can't book the tickets until 12 weeks prior.

What's the most cost effective way of doing the trip please?

There are direct (Cross Country) trains from Southampton to Manchester Piccadilly, so if you take a train from Fareham to Southampton, you can do this in fewer legs. Cross Country do discount for longer distance. From bitter experience, I wouldn't solely rely on rail transport direct to the Airport, as trains are often terminated at Piccadilly (coming from other areas) - there is also a connecting tram from Piccadilly to the Airport, which doesn't take a huge amount of time.

i did a similar journey last year, took a virgin from Bham and changed at crewe. cheaper and less messy than cross country
