Hi, my husband has lost his job a few weeks ago after 30 years.
Is there anything we should be doing? People to inform etc whilst he's looking for another job. However he is due a operation next week which means if he was still employed he would have been off sick for 6 weeks for that period. I Only work part time. Is he entitled to any benefit help or anything else please?

Any helpful advice would be very much appreciated

Depends how mush redundancy he got
  • Insurance companies may want to increase premiums for being unemployed, whether they want to know now or at renewal is down their own polices which you would need to read.
  • I suggest you post on the benefit boards, where people will know more about what you're entitled to. If your husband wasn't about to go into hospital he would (probably) be entitled to contributions based JSA* for 6 months. I suggest you ring the jobcentre TOMORROW and explain your situation, as most if not all claims can't be backdated, so you need to get things moving as soon as possible.

The site https://www.entitledto.co.uk/ might help you learn more about benefits you might be entitled to, and thus who you should be telling. Also, if you have a mortgage, let your mortgage company know now and explain that you may have problems (if this is so). Mortgage companies are far more likely to cut you some slack if you tell them in advance of problems.
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
