  • If any of you are interested there is currently a petition to ask the UK government to debate in parliment to Ban the use of all non-recyclable and unsustainable food packaging. This is on a government website.

  • Hi taff I've used the lollipop sticks before but found when they got wet they went mouldy or the ink ran and couldn't tell what the plants were:eek:. The allotment looked very messy that year:rotfl:. Hopefully you won't have the same issues.
    CRx Happy planting

I've started sowing lots of seeds ready for the allotment and instead of buying lots of little white plastic plant markers, I've made my own out of cut up butter tubs. Not only saved several pounds but reduced our plastic use as well (ok its just a very small amount but it all counts.)

Egg shells are very handy for seedlings, and you can stand them in the egg boxes they came in. When it comes to planting out just break the shell into the hole and it feeds the seedling too.

My mother always used to tell me what was wrong with every present I bought her and how she wouldn't wear/use it. I started buying her things I liked which I retrieved after she died.

  • Thanks the cross rabbit I've just signed it.

For those interested the govt is consulting on local councils being consistent with what recyclable items are collected (it is quite a long survey but worth persevering with)

  • Well I got my PA to climb up and get my soda syphon down and she cleaned it up and filled it with water. I then went down and found the (decades old) cartridges and used one (nothing no sound of it filling) used anther (again nothing) assume they are so old that they no longer work. Used another from a newer box (still quite old) and that worked (heard it filling) then tried it and it absolutely blasted it out and nearly soaked us both (LOL) so had to do a few more squirts to relieve some of the pressure. The liquid just came out cloudy and no bubbles so I thought I must be doing something wrong as I'd never done it before (only ever used it as a kid after my Dad had filled it.

After a quick g00gle it turns out that yes I had done it wrong. You need icy cold water to start with (helps drag the gas in) then use the cartridge to fill, then shake it (as this help the gas getting into all of the water not just the top) then let it settle a bit in the fridge before using.

So I'll be getting my PA to empty it out tomorrow and trying again correctly this time.

Does anyone know if you can recycle the cartridges can they just go in the recycling with the tins or does the fact that they had gas in them (does it all completely empty) mean you can't? As I don't want to create a different kind of waste that can't be recycled. I see that you can send s0da stream gas canisters back to them but they a different and branded or should I just buy a s0da stream?
    Your thoughts would be appreciated.

  • I got my PA to dig through one of the cupboards and find the yoghurt maker that I purchased years ago (at a very MSE half price) but due to my disability I never got around to using it (which is not very MSE). Anyway there was a packet of mango flavoured mix in the box and she has done it so it should be ready tomorrow - I'll let you all know how it turned out.

In future I won't be using the packets as they are expensive and not ZW so I'll buy a tub of yoghurt with live cultures in and use that and then just save some from each batch to start the next batch.

I'm sorry your sister is unappreciative of your gifts. I'd just give her money or a gift voucher so she can get what she wants. Sometimes there are just people who can't be pleased whatever you do - but that is their issue and not yours.
Don't be discouraged others will appreciate your efforts.
May be do a tag to hang from the handle of the bag to state what you are doing any why - or phrase it like 'I'm contributing to saving the planet in your name as part of my gift to you, so please re-use this bag again to save the planet that bit more'
