Raw gums

I’ve been having problems with the skin on my gums shedding frequently for the last couple of months which my dentist is aware of and thinks is an auto immune response. He’s advised warm salt water rinses to keep the gums from getting too sore.

Has anyone else had this and had any success with different toothpastes, changes to diet or any other non medical tips to slow things down a bit at least even if it doesn’t clear the problem up completely?

  • From experience I know Stannous Fluoride used in some posh toothpastes such as Oral B Pro Expert range can cause the inner mouth skin to peel off. So perhaps try a bog standard toothpaste with fluoride?

I'm sensitive to SLS in toothpastes which makes my gums very sore. I now get my toothpaste from the health food shop as generally they have SLS free option that also have fluoride in (they also so fluoride free in case that's part of the problem). I currently use kingfisher (and I prefer the fennel option to mint as well) and have no problems. I've also used green people and weleda without issues.

Initially I went for fluoride free, but it seems that SLS is the real issue (and apparently the more common one).

My dentist and the periodontist are both happy that the SLS-free toothpaste does the job properly.

That’s really interesting as I do struggle with a very dry scalp when I use shampoo with sulfates which clears up completely with sulfate free. I wonder if this is part of my oral problem - definitely worth a try

And thanks too for the info about stannous flouride which Id never even heard of. Sounds like a trial of a natural toothpaste is worth a go

Aldi , Superdrug do sls free toothpastes. Dentalux in Aldi and Superdrug own brand .
Stannous fluoride is only present in oral b toothpastes. However many people have problems with peeling skin on gums with oral b which is probably due to the thymol and other flavourings.

I was told by Maxio Facial to use SLS free, you really need to watch it though - I was told all Sensodyne are SLA free which is wrong it is the only Daily Care which is. Aslo Dentalux System 5 for sensetive care is SLS free and is under a £1 for very large tube in Lidl ( not Aldi) this is what I am using at the moment.
I was also told to use alcohol free mouthwash and I always use it well after cleaning teeth as understand it is no use straight after cleaning teeth. All this has helped the raw gums although I have constant problems with Burning Mouth again thoughts are this is liked to my age and possible immune problems.

SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate) is in lots of things and you mentioned dry scalp too and you find it is shampoos too, I get SLS free shampoo when my scalp is bad. My gums are a nightmare at times and I too have been told it may be my immune system due to me using long term asthma and allergy medication, seems my body doesn't fight of allergies quickly.

I’m going to try to get some Dentalux later this week but in the meantime I got hold of some Dr Bronner which is SLS free and my mouth feels a lot better already so this may be the answer. The Dr B is also fluoride free however so I’d rather try and find a flouride toothpaste if I can.

Thanks everyone for all your advice. I’m really glad I asked the question as my mouth feels so much better already!
