Do you think about brexit when applying

Basically I want to get a new job but I am worried about how brexit could affect the economy. I work for the government at the moment but am scared that if I jump ship to another company they could leave the U.K. due to brexit.

Comments

  • Well the way to look at it, any employer could make any decision that would affect your employment Brexit or no Brexit.

They could decide to stay in the U.K. but relocate to an area you didn't want to go to.

    They could expand even.

Let's hope this doesn't turn into a Brexit debate

It probably depends on the industry you would be working in.

If you want to become a barber, it probably makes no odds. If you want to work in the manufacturing of cars then I would imagine its probably better to hedge your bets and stay where you are.

Two companies I have worked for one relocated north and one relocated abroad long before Brexit, just do what we all do in that situation, find another job.

I doubt any major employers would consider instigating a move with 3 months to go.

It's possible, but the disruption to business would be massive without steps being taken now, or even 3 months ago. If you're concerned just look at Europe wide recruitment for your perspective employer.

Even without the 'B' word, there are always many unknowns when thinking about a new job. If you are really concerned then hang on a few months until we know what form the exit will take.

    Well,

    Who knows?!

It sort of depends on where you are applying for too. Small, UK-based, companies may find it difficult to re-locate so could start cutting staff (normally) from the bottom-up (though be wary if there seems to be too many chefs in the kitchen, or too many chiefs and not enough Indians..). You might be fine if you're on a mid-high rung of the ladder in a fairly-profitable line of work (high street retailing may be a bad choice, for example).

Multinational companies would, I suspect, be more willing to close down UK branches but a lot have already done so. Many businesses may just be trying to pile on the pressure for a deal which suits them, and may have little intention of moving when push comes to shove..

I imagine that, as someone who works for the government, you could have an idea of what sort of businesses may be incentivised to stay within the UK in the next few months/years as well.

But don't forget that the world is constantly changing; if you find your new employer leaving the UK then you'll find that new businesses spring up in their place to fill the gaps. You'll have transferrable skills (if you get a decent stint in this new job) which can be taking to other companies etc.

There's also the question as to whether you could in fact weather it out in this current role for the next 10-12 months at which point we'll all have a clearer idea of what Brexit means (hopefully!).

Absolutely. It has been all over the news how employers are worried about being able to find enough staff and it is one of the reasons there's been a jump in pay rises this year.

My personal view is to effectively ignore Brexit when deciding on your next career move - no-one knows what's going to happen, or even if Brexit will actually go ahead...

What line of work within government are you in?
