What's a good pension for sole trader?

  • Is the pension I linked a SIPP? I thought it was stakeholder.

I'm so confused. I just want something simple, doesn't have to be the best.

Maybe I should take a mini retirement now and spend the money. At least then I wouldn't have to worry about it.

...and your older self wll slap you around the face with a wet fish if you did..

Seriously, a simple low-cost pension with one fund, something like Vanguard LS60 (as is oft-recommended on these boards), will do you far better...

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • So vanguard do offer a pension? People keep saying it hasn't launched yet.

Have a look at an Aviva pension - its technically a SIPP but they offer a simple set of investment options

    No they don't yet.

There are 2 aspects to consider:

    1) The pension provider you want to use like Aviva or Cavendish or AJ Bell.

    2) The investments you buy within the pension that the provider manages for you like Vanguard VLS 60 or thousands of other funds.

Think of (1) like the supermarket you buy from and (2) like the product(s) you put in your basket and buy from them.

Heinz baked beans can be purchased from many supermarkets and VLS60 can be purchased from many pension providers

We have a Funds Network pension from Cavendish, chose muti-asset fund (was VLS at the time) and set up a DD. Easy and simple.

As we have got closer to retirement and I have learnt more about investing from here and other sites we have added some complimentary funds and started to reduce our exposure to equities but you are a long way from having to think about that.

Do you intend to follow the church of vanguard or are you more open minded?

There are plenty of pension providers.

  • So I tried opening an AJ Bell SIPP but I didn't understand the questions they asked in the sign-up process so I gave up.

I'm currently looking at Nutmeg which seems more comprehensible. Is this a good option? I like the idea of going for their socially responsible fund.
