Halifax Basic Bank Account

Hello
My first post, although lurking for a couple of months. I will post a "hello" thread soon
My Halifax Basic Bank Account was closed yesterday, even though the OR had no objection to it staying open
I found out when logging on to make some payments last night.
Also very sneakily they allowed my Pay to be credited to the account overnight
So all I had this morning was £40 cash, needless to say I had to take the day off work, I spoke to the friendly lady at the OR office, no complaints there, she suggested I go in and show them the letter, I spent 50 - 60 minutes on hold mainly while passed around 3 or 4 people at the Bank, finally I spoke to somebody who seemed to know what he was doing. But he confirmed that it was the Halifax's policy to close accounts, no matter what the OR says
I went in to the branch, they confirmed the account was closed and then asked if I wanted to withdraw the balance :T Well, OK if you insist I said .... so now I have £200 and a very nice cheque which hopefully will be paid into the Co-Op account that I opened on the phone in ten minutes
I will take note of the three strikes policy, to be honest in the last four years that I have had my Halifax BBA I probably messed up 4 or 5 times on DDs so I will hope to keep a closer eye on them.
I still feel frustrated that a bank a/c that offers no credit facilities or cheque cards is now closed !!! where is the logic in that. I am fortunate in a way that I am paying the top 70% of my excess to the OR so you can see I am getting a nice amount paid into the Halifax every week. If they could have stuck by me for the next 3 - 6 years, in the long run they would possibly have benefitted from my money.
Now they are just added to the list of dirtballs that I scrape off my shoe

I know how you feel. Nearly 3 weeks ago I tried to close an electron account and they said it should be done within a week. I went online after a week to find it still there. So I went in and asked what had happened. They said they didn't have any paperwork saying I wanted to close it (in the same branch I asked it to be closed in  ). I asked for a card to be sent out for the account then as I lost my previous one (got another account opened which is why I didn't see the point in keeping the electron as they gave me a debit card) which arrived on Wednesday. I've gone online today to find that they have now closed the electron account on the day I recived the card  . Fair enough they transfered the money that was in it to my debit account but it's stupid that it not only took them nearly 3 weeks but also they told me when I went in that they had nothing to say that I asked for it to be closed, then close it on the day I get the damn card  . I want to know what the hell they are playing at.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy

Hi ther, no expert but here is my bit.
I too have a Halifax basic account to whom i spoke to on thursday as suggested by my OR. They told me my account would be "frozen" but i would need to make arrangements for pay and tax credit payments etc.
Told my OR and he was pleased, stating he would write to them saying he is happy for me to keep running the account. Dont think he picked up the same message as me.
My Dad opened a Halifax basic account in his name for me expecting this to happen a few months ago, pppheeeeeeewwwww.
Still they are a bit out of line as they never said the accounr would close. Luckily read the sticky at the top of the board.
Coop are supposed to be good but my OH owes them £18000, can i still have an account???????
BR as of 07/11/07 thank god with mass relief.
Greatful for payment cards but cant use them for life ins and house ins!
Best wishes

If you are opening an account at the Coop in just your name you should be fine providing the £18,000 is not in joint names. If it is just his debt you should have no problem opening account in just your name.
